AUSTRALIAN  STAMP  WEBSITE King George V - Kangaroos 1913-1939 Comprehensive List Revised: 30 March 2026 From Federation on 1 January 1901, the six States continued to issue their own Stamps while the selection of an acceptable Australian Stamp Design progressed. The first initiative was the circa. 1902 "C.A." Overprints that appears to be rejected, however some "samples" do exist. Between 1903 and 1910 a number of essays have been recorded, none being acceptable. In 1910 the First Commonwealth Design proposal was also rejected. In 1911 a Stamp Design Competition was undertaken, with some 85 entries submitted. The winning design was subsequently rejected by the newly appointed Postmaster General. In 1912, the Kangaroo and Map essays were released in April 1912, in two styles. One in horizontal format between draped flags, and the other in Vertical format without the flags. The original Master Dies were prepared by Samuel Reading of Melbourne, and the earliest issue appears to be the 1d. Red Kangaroo on the 2 January 1913.
