STAMP HISTORY
Nauru - An Australian Mandate
1888 ..... Nauru (then called Pleasant Island) was annexed by Germany, with German stamps used until 1897.
1897 ..... Germany incorporated Nauru in to its Marshall Islands Protectorate, and used Marshall Island stamps until 1914.
1914 ..... Nauru was captured by Australia Troops at the start of WWI, and used stamps overprinted "N. W. Pacific islands" until 1916.
1916 ..... Under Australian Administration, stamps of Great Britain overprinted "NAURU" were used until 1924.
1923 ..... Australia granted a full "Trustee Mandate" over Nauru.
1924 ..... Stamps inscribed "NAURU" were first issued.
1966 ..... Nauru became Self-Governing.
1968 ..... Nauru became fully Independent on 31 January 1968 and began issuing its own stamps, inscribed "Republic of Nauru".
